Story Time

SCHOOL COMPOUND

The story of Wollega Adventist Academy began way back in 1925 when Seventh-day Adventist missionaries started a mission school in a place called Domi about 70 kilometers from Gimbie. Their goal was big: to provide education and serve the local community as part of the church's expanding mission in western Ethiopia.

But then, only two years later, in 1927, things started to go bad. The missionaries had to leave Domi due to a serious challenge in the area due to a malaria outbreak. So they moved the mission and the school to Gimbie. After that, the educational work continued and slowly expanded.

Then, in 1968 Wollega Adventist Academy (WAA) was officially founded and relocated to Dongoro town. It was led by Pastor A.E. Anderson and Mr. Leroy Khun. Mr. Khun became the school's first principal. He was a hardworking man who gave his time and energy.

After Mr. Khun departed in 1971, the academy continued to grow under other dedicated principals like E.E. Perry, Pastor Bekele Biri, Abebe Disasa and Beat Odermatt. Their dedication and service enhanced the mission of the school and extended its reach in the community.

Today, that vision has grown significantly, and Wollega Adventist Academy continues to serve the community through quality education. The school now provides education from Kindergarten to Grade 12, welcoming both sponsored and self-sponsored students from different parts of the country.

Over the years, the academy has built a strong reputation for academic excellence and character development. At a time when the national university entrance examination pass rate is often reported to be between 3% and 5%, Wollega Adventist Academy consistently achieves outstanding results, with approximately 90% to 99% of its students successfully passing the examination each year. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication of the school's administrators, teachers, students, and supporting community.

Today, Wollega Adventist Academy remains committed to its mission of preparing young people for success in higher education, meaningful service, and responsible leadership, while upholding the values upon which the school was founded.
